I f#4ound this video on youtube about teen pregnancy. I’ve chosen this video because it’s a major problem in Eeyou Estchee. A lot of our teenagers face teen pregnancy and I can talk about my own experience in teen pregnancy. It’s been in my family for three generations.
I think in our community has lack of support with our teenagers and we don’t have sex education in our school. Parents don’t have talk with their children about savesex and not knowing about contraception for their teenagers.
If we had sex education in our school would teach students to be aware what a mother goes through during her pregnancy and what help they can get not to concive at a young age.
The video shows support with parents how they can help their teenage children to teach them safe sex. To talk with them and showing them their love and support to be open with them.
Our teenagers need to learn how difficult it is to raise a family, how they can proved for their children. It’s very important to get education first before they start a family. Speaking from my own experience, it is every difficult for me with my second language literacy and writing in English because I never finished high school but I managed to enroll in courses that are provided in our communities but I would like to further my education so I would have no problems with my second language. I’m glad that I have the support I need from my husband with our boys to talk to them with sex.
Since the time I’ve been teaching, I taught only pre school. In upper elementary and high school use the computers in class and outside of school. Where ever they have access with computers. There is a computer lab in the youth center that are connected to the Internet. I noticed that the teenagers use the Internet to explore what is in the network. They learn how to make up accounts and set up their websites. The sites help them to learn to write in their second language. The computer is like a tutor all the information is there and the spell check is there to help how to write in English.
First time I had the Internet at home, my teenage relatives helped me to make up accounts on MSN hot mail and bebo. I was amazed how well they worked on line. When I needed help my sisters who are younger than me and my sons helped me with the computer. I found out they were more educated with media than I did. I remember I couldn’t even upload pictures on my profile and music from you tube, I depended on my son who was only 11 yrsold to help me import music and pictures. I wondering how he thought about him teaching me , he probably felt good about himself.
When the Ipod
came out of course my children knew about them and asked if they can have them. They were the once who import them to the computer and uploaded their favorite music. I would say the media is very important for the students, not only they learn how to work with computers and other kinds of technology it also help them to write and to read in their second language. Also it has the negative ,it’s not save to go on line without knowing what programs and sites that not safe for children. But they learn to be dependent and to be on the safe side not to get in trouble.
I think media is a huge thing in world wide. Leaving in a isolated community of Whapmagoostui it has a big impact with media through the Internet, video, technology, books and advertisement. We constantly get information what is popular , news , top ten movies or music through satellite dish which as a lot of channels depending which package we buy and the Internet is there to surf 24/7 which has very thing you look for. Young people imitate what they learn through media. They were clothing which don’t have anything to do with our culture. They buy the big brand names of shoes and clothing like G Unit, Sean John ,Choppers etc… Those clothing are very expensive and has no connection with our people of eeyou estchee.
I remember one time my son asked for guitar hero. I respond by saying what is guitar hero.He explained it’s a guitar that is connected to a playstation 2 you can actually play on t.v. I asked where he saw it. He told me he played it at his friends. By playing the game once he got really hooked up with it. He learned fast how to play the guitar but for me I couldn’t follow which colour bar to press. I found it to difficult to play and didn’t interest me. Even my 8yr old could play in lower levels it helps him to follow steps and with is reflexes and coordination.
